The Muff Liquor Company Irish Gin is a premium spirit produced in County Donegal, Ireland, by The Muff Liquor Company. Inspired by the founder Laura Bonner's grandfather, a potato farmer and poitín maker, this gin uses a unique potato-based spirit.

Key Features:

  • Irish Origin: County Donegal, Ireland.
  • Base Spirit: Distilled six times from four different types of Irish potatoes.
  • Botanicals: A blend of nine botanicals are cold-infused overnight into the potato spirit before distillation. These include:
    • Juniper Berries
    • Mandarin
    • Lemon Peel
    • Grapefruit Peel
    • Lime Peel
    • Rosemary
    • Elderflower
    • Coriander
    • Angelica
    • Orris Root Powder
  • Unique Addition: A hint of Champagne extract is added after distillation.
  • ABV: 40% ABV.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Aromatic and fresh, with prominent citrus notes (mandarin, lemon, grapefruit, lime) leading the way, followed by floral elderflower and a hint of earthy rosemary. The juniper provides a classic gin backbone but is described as having a low profile.
  • Palate: Smooth and vibrant, showcasing a balance of sweet mandarin, refreshing citrus, and herbal rosemary. The Champagne extract adds a subtle effervescent note and enhances the gin's soft, creamy texture and complexity.
  • Finish: Long and elegantly balanced, with a gentle herbal and floral essence lingering alongside a light, refreshing hint of juniper and citrus. Some describe it as having a soft, round creaminess from the potato spirit.

Overall Impression:

Muff Irish Gin is a well-regarded contemporary-style gin that distinguishes itself with its potato base and a unique blend of botanicals, particularly the prominent citrus and the subtle champagne note. It's considered smooth, well-balanced, and easy to drink, making it enjoyable in a Gin and Tonic or various cocktails.
