Part of Diageo’s 2024 Special Releases collection, themed “Spirited Xchange,” this Lagavulin 12 Year Old expression, titled Fireside Tales, showcases the distillery's signature Islay character with a refined twist. Matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and refill European oak butts, it is bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.4% ABV. The result is a complex whisky where bold peat smoke is tempered by inviting sweetness, offering a nuanced and memorable tasting experience.
Tasting Notes
-
Nose: Aromas of a smouldering bonfire on a distant beach and wood ash, backed by subtle fruity notes suggesting rowan jelly and hints of unripe redcurrants.
-
Palate: Smoothly creamy and mouth-filling texture, very sweet to taste at first then quickly drying, with a sprinkling of salt and controlled smokiness. A drop of water brings out more sweetness without significantly altering the profile.
-
Finish: Long and powerfully smoky, drying with a twist of warming spice that lingers in the aftertaste—a classic Lagavulin.
This limited-edition release is a testament to Lagavulin's mastery in balancing robust peat smoke with nuanced sweetness, making it a compelling choice for both seasoned aficionados and those new to Islay malts.
