Bombay London Dry Gin 86

  • Description: Bombay London Dry Gin 86 refers to the original Bombay London Dry Gin bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV). This gin is based on a recipe dating back to the 18th century and was first launched in 1960. It is made using a vapor-infusion process, where the spirit vapor passes through a basket containing eight hand-selected botanicals instead of being boiled with them. These botanicals are: juniper berries, coriander seeds, lemon peel, cassia bark, orris root, angelica root, licorice root, and almonds. This process is said to create a more delicate and aromatic gin.

  • Awards and Ratings: Bombay London Dry Gin 86 has received recognition over the years:

    • Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2010.
    • Silver Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2010 (another source).
    • Rated 89 points by Wine Enthusiast in 2011.
  • Tasting Notes:

    • Aroma: The nose is often described as soft and balanced, with prominent juniper notes accompanied by hints of citrus (lemon peel), subtle spice (coriander, cassia), and a touch of sweetness from licorice and almond. Some detect floral hints of angelica and orris root.
    • Palate: The palate is generally smooth with a noticeable but not overpowering juniper presence. It offers a slightly sweet character, sometimes described as having a vanilla-like creaminess (possibly due to the wheat base). Notes of bitter lemon pith and creamy angelica stalk can also be found early on, leading into a soft baking spice towards the finish.
    • Finish: The finish is typically clean and dry, with a lingering warmth from the alcohol and subtle hints of licorice and spice. Some describe a peppery note.
  • Summary: Bombay London Dry Gin 86 is a classic and versatile gin known for its balanced flavor profile where juniper is present but not dominant, complemented by citrus and spice notes. Its smooth character and traditional botanical blend make it a solid choice for a wide range of gin cocktails, particularly a Gin and Tonic or Martini. While often overshadowed by its more modern sibling, Bombay Sapphire, the original London Dry offers a more traditional and juniper-forward experience for those who appreciate the classic style.
