Kilchoman Machir Bay is the flagship release from Kilchoman Distillery, Islay's farm distillery. It's a vatting of bourbon barrel and sherry cask matured whiskies, typically around 5 years old. Named after the stunning Machir Bay on the west coast of Islay, it's known for showcasing the distillery's signature balance of peat smoke and fresh, fruity character.
Tasting Notes:
-
Nose: Initially offers a burst of fresh citrus fruit (lemon, lime), followed by sweet vanilla, gentle peat smoke, and a touch of brine. Hints of orchard fruits like pear and green apple may also emerge.
-
Palate: The palate delivers a lovely integration of flavors. Sweetness from the bourbon barrels (vanilla, caramel, honey) is immediately apparent, balanced by a distinct but not overpowering peat smoke. Notes of white pepper, lemon zest, and a subtle maritime influence come through.
-
Finish: Medium in length, the finish leaves a lingering warmth with notes of peat smoke, sweet barley, and a touch of citrus. The sweetness and smoke fade gracefully.
